Walbut Bridge

Walbut Bridge is just below Walbut Lock. It links the village Melbourne with the A1079, via the village of Allerthorpe. Although there is convenient access to the canal here, there is now parking space for only one car beside the lock. Please avoid parking near the bridge because farmers need to take large vehicles over the bridge.

Sympathetic restoration

Walbut Bridge is a Grade II Listed structure, like the other three brick and stone bridges crossing the canal. While PCAS volunteers were hard at work restoring Walbut Lock (1992-3) the Highways Agency started work on Walbut Bridge. Weathered bricks were carefully removed and replaced with matching bricks. A superb job was done and the bridge now looks as if it will last another 200 years.
